Save Your Roof by avoiding the following mistakes!

Don’t wait for Rain and Storm season this year. “Save Your Roof”. The seasons continue to change in Atlanta and surrounding cities. The south comes with a lot of benefits. However predictble weather is not one of those. Your roof becomes more and more worn every single day. You worry that you’ll have to replace it entirely before long – a process you can’t begin to fathom. How are you going to Save Your Roof?

We’ll admit upfront that not all roofs are salvageable. For some damaged roofs, the time has simply come for a replacement. After ten or fifteen years, this is hardly avoidable. But if your roof is less than five or six years old, there are steps you can take to Save Your Roof from an untimely demise. In this article, we’re going to walk you through five mistakes you should avoid if you want your roof to last.

#1Missing Regular Inspections

First, we’re going to fight a common myth. You don’t need to hire a team of professionals to inspect your roof regularly. If you want a complete inspection – which we recommend twice per year – contact your local roofing company. Otherwise, make a checklist and set time aside to personally inspect your roof.

Start your inspection by looking for signs of damage like missing or broken shingles, water stains, exterior spots, dripping, growth, and damaged flashing. It’s important to note that roofing inspections can’t be completed just by walking around your home. You’ll need to access your attic and hard-to-reach portions of your garage to finish the job properly.

If you notice one or more of these problems and are unable to pinpoint the source of the problem, contact an independent roofing contractor at your earliest convenience.

#2 Procrastinating Roof Repair

When you discover or suspect that your roof has a serious problem, don’t ignore it. Choosing to ignore the warning signs will lead to bigger, more expensive issues. If your transmission started thumping, hissing, and smoking, you wouldn’t wait to make an appointment with your local mechanic – so why wait for a roof repair? This is your home, after all. Doesn’t it deserve the best?

#3 Skipping Roof Replacement

Roof repair is, ultimately, preferable to complete roof replacement. However, it’s important to acknowledge when your roof has had enough. When the time comes to retire your roof, don’t wait until the last minute. Have a new, healthy roof installed that will last for ten or fifteen years. Depending on the material you choose, your home could have a completely different look. Don’t forget to learn how your new roof should be maintained.  You should have a local roofer such as the team at SRC help you maintain the health of your roof.

Also – and we can’t stress this enough – don’t let the tenth, fifteenth, or twentieth birthday of your roof pass without investing in a complete inspection by professionals. Even if your roof isn’t showing signs of wear and tear, it could be time to replace it. Sometimes, only an eye familiar with roofing can spot the difference between a truly exceptional old roof and a roof that has serious problems underneath the surface.

#4 Not Learning the Basics about Roofs

It never hurts to know more about your roof. Often, homeowners don’t know anything about the material, quality, or function of their roof until a leak appears or shingles begin to fall off in droves. Educate yourself on the following things:

(1) Consistent inspection is essential. You could have a small roof leak, missing shingles, or a complete infestation. Whatever the case, frequent roof inspections will ensure that your family is living under a safe roof.

(2) You can inspect your roof, as we discussed earlier. Learn the ins and outs of personal roof inspection by creating a detailed checklist and asking questions when professionals come to visit.

(3) Leaks aren’t always visible. They can be hidden in a sunroom or attic. They can hide inside shingles and drywall. Most importantly, they can do hundreds of dollars of damage before you even notice them. Keep an eye out for dropping spots and discoloration.

(4) There are many roofing materials available to you. It isn’t necessary to use shingles if you want something more stylish, personalized, or eco-friendly. Common materials include asphalt shingles, clay or concrete tiles, slate, wood shingles, and synthetic roofing products.

(5) Roofing doesn’t have to be over the top expensive. Local roofing contractors will contact your insurance company directly when possible, or give you proper guidance to get you the best bang for your buck.

(6) Roof replacement isn’t always the answer. Don’t decide to replace your roof until you’ve spoken with a team of experienced roofing professionals. There may still be a way to Save Your Roof. However if not, don’t fight it, as it may be best in the long run.

#4 Ignoring Roof Cleaning Day

Set aside an afternoon in early spring and late fall to thoroughly clean your roof. This doesn’t mean removing debris from shingles alone. It also means washing and removing leaves, mud, and other remains from your gutters. This could require several hours of your time, especially if your home is surrounded by large trees. Dreading a physically demanding afternoon? Make roof cleaning a family project!
